By Rob Hunter Published May 16, 2022

Crossing the Streams is our series of guides looking at all the deals coming to the big streaming services every month. This time around, we’re checking out what’s new streaming on Amazon Prime in May 2022, including a new season of The Kids in the Hall, a Tony Scott double feature, new shows, new movies, and more.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month for May 2022

kids in the hallway

The children in the hall It ran for five seasons in the late ’80s and early ’90s before finding success in syndication, but it wasn’t long before the company’s five members, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson, get going. separate paths. There was a movie (underrated), a reunion tour (which I always missed), and a limited series (on murder!), but now they’re back where they belong with a comedy show. Season 1 (of many, we hope) makes it clear that all five are still comedic geniuses with an excellent mix of characters, hilarity, and more than a few dicks. So many dicks! The gang brings back old classics, creates new gems and will leave you laughing and smiling through the end credits.

New Amazon Originals for May 2022

sundance emergency

the seven seasons of the forest which ran from 2014 to 2021 should be a model for other long-running book character adaptations. Each season adapted one or two of Michael Connelly’s best-selling thrillers, and now that it’s over, its main characters continue on with Bosch: Legacy. The new show follows Harry Bosch’s (a fantastic Titus Welliver) journey as a private detective after retiring from the Los Angeles Police Department, while his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) struggles to become a rookie cop. Welliver is a strong enough actor who brings a great character to life, which means we will absolutely follow him in future adventures.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival featured several fantastic movies, and Amazon has bought one for a new Prime Original. Emergency (premiere May 27) takes a simple premise and turns it into one of the most intense and nerve-wracking watches of the year. Three college students on their way to a party find a classmate passed out at home. It seems like a simple enough problem, but two of the friends are black and they know that an unconscious white woman in her house would only be a problem for them, so they try to send her back. It’s an incredibly suspenseful story told with wit, clever filmmaking, and strong performances. There is also something to be said for creating a film that is as entertaining as it is powerful in its themes and commentary.

Westerns, westerns, westerns!

open range

Westerns are a genre (more or less) that never gets old despite falling out of favor with Hollywood and movie-going audiences. Two fantastic examples are coming to Prime this month, and they’d make a great double feature. first is tombstone (1993), George P. Cosmatos’s lively and exciting retelling of the Wyatt Earp saga complete with a tremendous cast including Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Stephen Lang, Dana Delany, Michael Rooker, Billy Bob Thornton, Charlton Heston, Thomas Haden Church, Jason Priestley, Billy Zane, Terry O’Quinn, and more familiar faces. It’s an exciting movie, and while the ideal stunt double might star Kevin Costner Wyatt Earp for obvious reasons, instead we go with…

open range (2003), baby! That’s right, Kevin Costner’s latest directorial effort will always be a pick in these columns because it remains one of the best westerns ever made. The friendship, the heroism, the honor, the violence, and the love and respect for the great outdoors make this a historic moment, and both Costner and Robert Duvall do a tremendous job as a pair of ranchers trying to move cattle to along a dangerous stretch. It’s a beautiful film, both in its landscapes and its themes, and when violence strikes, it does so with intensity and mastery. Costner is apparently moving on to a new directorial effort and, happily, it’s also a western. Keep coming!

A Tony Scott Double Feature!

enemy of the state

Tony Scott’s sixteen features include more than a few outright hits that could go toe-to-toe with the best of their respective years. Revenge (1990), the last boy scout (1991), true romance (1993), crimson tide (nineteen ninety five), Man on Fire (2004), Unstoppable (2010)… the man was a teacher. Two of the titles are coming to Prime this month, and you owe it to yourself to settle in for four hours of high-energy adrenaline, action, and genre brilliance. first is enemy of the state (1998), a gripping surveillance and conspiracy thriller starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman (as a character who could very well carry on from 1974). The conversation). Lots of high-tech equipment, huge sets and suspenseful beats up to the last minute make for a captivating ride.

Deja vu (2006, via freevee) doesn’t get the same respect, in part because its plot is a mix of nonsense and sci-fi beats, but it’s no less entertaining for that. Denzel Washington stars as an ATF agent who works with the team behind a secret government project to stop a terrorist plot, but darker secrets come to light during the investigation. Time itself becomes malleable here, and Scott quickly moves us through the exposition to focus on character and action. Paula Patton and Val Kilmer are along for the ride, and it’s the kind of big, explosive action movie that just sucks you in for two hours of serious thrills. Try it, you will like it.
