Jurgen Klopp reviews Southampton’s win

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has dismissed suggestions about his team’s recent Premier League games against Burnley and Manchester City.

Each game is huge for very different reasons, with Burnley fighting for survival in the division while City must win on the final day to clinch their fourth Premier League title in five seasons. However, Gerrard has dismissed suggestions that the games are more important to the opposition than his side.

Villa has endured a disappointing campaign and is languishing at 14 the place in the Premier League with just two wins from their last nine games. Both wins, against Norwich and Burnley, were against teams currently in the relegation zone.

While the Midlands club are not involved in the relegation battle this campaign and there is little doubt Gerrard will be in their position next season, he has dismissed suggestions that these games were of no significance to the club.

Asked in his pre-match press conference if these games were not as important to Villa as the opposition, he replied: “No they are not. Maybe that is true from his point of view, but I am not involved in a relegation battle or a title race, I am the manager of Aston Villa and these are games where we can take three important points. We will have a full house and we have 20,000 fans on the waiting list to see us. It’s my responsibility to win both games.”

Speaking specifically about the different challenge in both matches, the Villa boss continued: “We are always learning, we learn more about these players every day. The important thing for us is to focus on ourselves and aim to finish the season as strong as possible with two positive results. We have to try to improve our position in the league.”

Gerrard added: “The two games are obviously different challenges against teams at opposite ends of the league table. We have to prepare as well as possible for both games and we know that they are coming in a short time.

“All my players will have to be ready, as I would be very surprised if my team is the same for each of those games.”

Villa host Burnley on Thursday night before traveling to Manchester City on the final day of the campaign just three days later. Pep Guardiola’s side need three points to clinch the title ahead of Liverpool, who host Wolves at Anfield.
