If you’re trying to live a more sustainable life, finding truly useful eco-trades may be more difficult than you think. That’s why when we discovered really cool and useful eco-friendly products like Swedish dish towels, we became obsessed. Well, there’s good news, because we’ve found another sustainable exchange that we can’t shut up about: Stasher bags.

Stasher makes a lot of claims about what these wonderful little bags can do, so we have a few of our own in various sizes to test them out. We bag them, wash them, microwave them, freeze them, and boil them to see if they really stack up. After all, we can definitely say that we will never buy another Ziploc bag again.

What are Stasher bags?

Stasher bags are reusable bags made from platinum grade silicone, which is the highest quality silicone. The bags are free of BPA, BPS, and other phthalates, and meet FDA and EU requirements for food contact and safety. This means that not only can you use Stasher bags to take your lunch to work or store leftovers in the fridge, but you can also put them in the freezer, microwave, oven, and even boiling water without worrying about the plastic or chemicals leach into your food. .

Benefits of Using Stasher Bags

The possibilities with Stasher bags are endless. You can freeze leftovers, pop popcorn in the microwave, reheat leftovers in the oven, and even sous vide a perfect steak. They are safer, more versatile and simply better than a traditional plastic bag.

Stasher bags come in tons of different sizes and dozens of colors to fit all of your kitchen and storage needs. On Amazon, you can shop between sandwich, snack, half-gallon, and medium sizes, and on the Stasher site there are additional options, including large and small sizes, a carabiner-equipped travel bag, and a small pocket. bag. Also, there is a great list of packs that you can get to start your Stasher collection.

Are Stasher bags any good?

storage bags

We’ve had several Stasher sandwich bags for over a year now and use them constantly, whether we’re packing lunch for a hike or storing leftover chili in the freezer. They have held up perfectly and we have never noticed any off taste when storing food in the bag.

We recently got our hands on a few more sizes, including the medium and large stand-ups, the half-gallon bag, and the snack bag to see if they’re as good as the original. In all honesty, we have been amazed at how the different sizes of Stashers open up a whole new world of food storage and cooking possibilities. Medium and large standup bags are now our favorite way to pop popcorn for movie nights because after popping popcorn directly in the Stasher, its flat bottom makes it easy to keep the bag next to us on the couch. The snack bag is perfect for a small amount of veggies, nuts or fruit or that little bit of chopped onion you didn’t finish putting in the pan. The half gallon has been amazing for storing large leftovers, and we can’t wait to try sous vide with it.

Stasher bags feature an easy-to-pinch seal that is airtight to keep food or leftovers fresh. We have never experienced any spills or leaks with our Stasher bags, but to double check, we filled the half gallon bag with water and turned it upside down, shaking it and squeezing it and not a single drop came out (while doing this we noticed that I could fill it with hot water to use as a heating pad or freeze it to use as an ice pack).

Bottom line

storage bags

Stasher bags are a little pricey up front (the standard sandwich bag is $12.63 each), but they’ll last for years and replace who knows how many boxes of plastic bags. And, if you accidentally put a hole in them or they reach the end of their life, you can send them back to Stasher, where they will be recycled via TerraCycle.

Even if Stasher bags were only sandwich-sized, we’d recommend them as a great way to reduce single-use plastic waste. However, thanks to Stasher’s wide variety of shapes and sizes, they are much more than a replacement for plastic bags. They cater to so many different needs and are truly an incredibly versatile tool that you need in your kitchen.
