The boy, believed to be four years old, suffered “significant facial injuries” and was airlifted to hospital, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said.
The child was stable when the transfer was made.
Emergency services were called to a private property in Widgee on the Sunshine Coast around 2pm yesterday.
It is not yet clear which breed of dog was responsible for the attack.
A Queensland Police spokesman said Gympie Regional Council would take up the matter.
The attack comes alongside reports of a separate incident in which a woman was allegedly attacked by a dog at Froggy Beach, Coolangatta, on the Gold Coast.
According to social media posts, the woman was attacked by a stranger’s dog.
But the Gold Coast City Council said it has not yet received an official complaint.
