Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the government is “supportive” of pay rises, following Labor leader Anthony Albanese’s decision to back a pay rise in line with the rate of inflation last week.
“We are in favor of a wage increase, but it is important that when the Fair Work Commission considers this, it looks at all the moving parts and all the moving factors,” Mr. Morrison said.
Morrison said he did not want Australians to “take a step forward and then two or three steps back” if wage increases led to a rise in the cost of living.
“That is why responsible financial management is so important.
“You have to understand how the economy works and if you don’t… that affects your ability to break through.”
