Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills was closed in both directions Tuesday night after a driver in a high-speed chase crashed.
The crash occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Mulholland Drive after the driver led law enforcement on a winding chase through the San Fernando Valley and at high speeds on the 101 Freeway.
Los Angeles police said the vehicle was believed to have been stolen, leading to the pursuit.
The driver lost control of the vehicle while going around a sharp curve with a police vehicle in close pursuit.
The vehicle went off the road where it was stuck or too damaged to drive.
Law enforcement officers on the scene spent more than an hour trying to get the driver to surrender.
The road was closed in both directions due to the accident when the SWAT team arrived on the scene as the driver repeatedly failed to respond to police orders to exit the vehicle.
Sky5 video showed SWAT team members deploying tear gas inside the vehicle. Shortly afterward, a second and third boat were deployed to the vehicle while the driver remained inside.
SWAT team members then approached the vehicle and began breaking the windows.
The driver was eventually removed from the vehicle and appeared to be unconscious. They were detained and transported away from the scene in unclear medical conditions.
