World No. 1 ranking is within reach for Australian star Minjee Lee after a big win in the US.
Major champion Minjee Lee is on the winner’s list in 2022 after converting her third-round lead into a two-shot victory at the LPGA Founders Cup in New Jersey.
The Australian World No.5 claimed her seventh LPGA title – and first since her breakthrough at the Evian Championships last year – by making three birdies on the back nine to beat American star Lexi Thompson by two shots. .
The 25-year-old Lee admitted his final round, the only one not in the ’60s at Upper Montclair Country Club, wasn’t his best, but he “did the job” taking the lead until the final day and holding it.
“I wasn’t really that nervous, but obviously I wasn’t hitting it as good as I wanted to,” Lee said on the Golf Channel broadcast.
“You know, I still drove it and kicked really well, so I took the positives.”
“I was really concentrating on each shot, one at a time. I got up on the green and I was, like, trying to see him go in. Many of them gasped. But at the end of the day I still got the job done, so I’m happy.”
Lee had recorded three top-five finishes in his last seven events.
The win capped her excellent form just a couple of weeks into the Women’s US Open.
