Lest We Forget | Maribyrnong and Hobson’s Bay

by Molly Magennis

With COVID restrictions all but lifted, Anzac commemoration services in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay will return to pre-pandemic normalcy this year, with many township residents expected to pay their respects on April 25.

Glen Best is the former president of the Spotswood-Kingsville RSL and has been serving in the Royal Australian Air Force since 1989.

Having been deployed to the Middle East for Anzac Day in 2004, he said the day is an opportunity to stop and reflect on the past experiences of the many brave Australians who have served their country.

“[You can reflect on] what that means for the future as well when you look at what is happening in the world, its current state,” he said.

“I mean, we have been in long-term operations, we have only stopped the Middle East after almost 15 years.

“It’s a little bit different, you know, standing in the relative safety of your local neighborhood, reflecting, you know, on people’s past experiences. It is an opportunity to reflect on the people you have lost in the past with whom you have served.”

This year the Spotswood-Kingsville RSL is running two services, a sunrise service at 5:45 a.m. and a morning service at 11 a.m.

A GunFire breakfast, consisting of Anzac biscuits and coffee, will be available at 5:20 am and when the early morning service is over, bacon and egg rolls and snacks will be served.

“Members of the public will have the opportunity to pay tribute if they wish as part of that service,” Best said.

“Then there will be a second service… which is a bit longer and more formal. At the end, the bar will be open, we will have a barbecue, there will be two during the afternoon at the RSL and, obviously, football on the big screen.

Donations of gold coins for the sunrise service breakfast are welcome, and any money raised will go to the Anzac appeal that supports the welfare of veterans.
