Elections in France: “Many voted to build a barricade against the extreme right”, says Macron

Emmanuel Macron has beaten far-right candidate Marine Le Pen to win the French presidency, projections show.

Macron won 58% of the vote to Le Pen’s 42%, in a narrower victory than in their previous contest in 2017.

Speaking to supporters in central Paris, he asked them not to boo Marine Le Pen’s name, saying: “From now on, I am no longer the candidate of one camp, but the president of all.”
