Driver killed after hitting highway sign post, second Aurora car death in 24 hours

AURORA, Col. (KDVR) – The driver of an early morning single-car accident on Interstate 225 has died, marking the second traffic-related death in Aurora in 24 hours.

At 8:45 am Sunday morning, Aurora911 received multiple calls about a serious accident that occurred on northbound I-225 near East Mississippi Avenue.

The investigation revealed that the driver of a silver Mustang was traveling northbound when he left the highway and struck a sign showing the exit for East Mississippi Avenue.

When officers arrived at the crash scene, they discovered the severely damaged Mustang with a single occupant inside. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Aurora Police Traffic Section is attempting to reconstruct the scene to determine what led up to the crash.

At this time, it is unknown if speed or intoxication was a contributing factor.

The identity of the driver is currently unknown and will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office. Anyone who witnessed or has dash cam footage of this accident is asked to contact the Aurora Police Traffic Section.

According to the Aurora Police Department, this is the 19th traffic-related death in Aurora so far this year. This death comes a day after a woman was killed in a crash involving two pickup trucks on East Colfax Avenue.
