Conservatives brace for a long night as top seats are declared

In one of the first results of the night, the Tories have failed in their attempt to wrest Sunderland council from Labour.

Speaking after Labor retained control of the council, Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq told Sky News: “I am delighted to see the result from Sunderland, mainly because I have spoken to MPs who are connected to Sunderland from the Party. Labour… and local activists, the Conservatives have knocked over the kitchen sink.

“I mean, the PM was there. When you’re in government, you just send the PM to seats that you think you can override and change. So the PM was there on Bank Holiday Monday and we still kept him.”

Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak visited Sunderland on the campaign trail.
