Almost out, Sultan enters interim bantamweight fight against Paul Butler

WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero is out of his fight with Paul Butler for his latest violation, and fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan will now be the Englishman’s new opponent.

Boxing Scene reported that the WBO Championship Committee held an emergency meeting regarding the situation and concluded that the Sultan and Butler fight will now be for the interim bantamweight title this Friday, April 22 in Liverpool, England.

Casimero’s highly anticipated fight with Butler was immediately canceled after the British Boxing Board of Control (BBoC) denied the former’s appeal to fight.

“Quadro Alas” found himself in hot water after the BBoC learned that he used a sauna to help him lose weight, as the board has a strict policy on the use of saunas.

“Therefore, in light of the above request, the WBO World Championship Committee grants sanction approval for the fight between Paul Butler and the first available world bantamweight contender, Jonas Sultan, to take place on Friday, April 22, 2022 at the Echo Arena. [M&S Bank Arena] in Liverpool, England, UK,” WBO founding president Luis Batista-Salas said in a letter to both parties that Boxing Scene was able to purchase a copy of.

Sultan, the victor of the highly touted Carlos Carballo, now has the opportunity to make an appointment with his compatriot in case he wins over Butler.

The upcoming interim title fight with the English boxer will be his second world title shot after failing to take the IBF junior bantamweight belt from Jerwin Ancajas in 2018.

After his latest infraction, it remains to be seen if the WBO will allow Casimero to keep his championship or if they’ve had enough of his antics and decide to strip him, ending his nearly three-year reign in disappointing fashion.
